Haverford HS hosts a Dodgeball Tournament

HAVERFORD, PA – Days before their holiday break the students of Haverford High School led by junior Alison Tintera and members of Haverford’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter coordinated a Dodgeball Tournament as part their annual service project, helping to raise more than $1,000 in support of the HEADstrong Foundation.  The effort was part several initiatives including: an awareness football game, a fundraising night at Panera Bread Company and a comfort kit drive for patients receiving care at the Abramson Cancer Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Tintera was inspired to get involved with HEADstrong after hearing Foundation President Cheryl Colleluori share the powerful story of her son Nicholas and the organization with more than 700 students at the 7th Congressional District’s Annual Youth Leadership Summit presented by Congressman Pat Meehan at Marple Newtown High School on October 6, 2015.  After the event, Tintera connected with the organization, pledging her commitment to raise awareness and funds to support the cause.

In front of a packed gymnasium more than 190 students took part in the Dodgeball Tournament.  Students wore lime green laces, crew socks and pre-wrap to show their support for the cause.  Spectators donated $1.00 to cheer on their fellow classmates as their competed.

“I was very moved by Cheryl Colleluori’s powerful words at the Youth Leadership Summit and was determined to get involved with the cause.  I knew that our FBLA chapter’s annual service project was the perfect way to engage our students and together we came up with some wonderful ways of giving back.  We are very proud to be able to contribute more than $1,000 towards HEADstrong’s mission and those affected by cancer.” said Tintera

“On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation and those affected by cancer we wish to thank Alison and Haverford High School for embracing our mission this year.  It is so incredible to see students finding hope and strength in the life of my son Nicholas and it is amazing to see his life inspiring such impact.  We truly appreciate these relentless efforts and wish to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Fords for their generosity and commitment.” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President & Nick’s Mom

About HEADstrong Foundation

The HEADstrong Foundation™ is a 501(c)(3) committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through providing essential programs and services.

HEADstrong™ is an non-profit organization that serves the cancer community by granting direct financial assistance to those financially impacted as a result of the disease, by providing complimentary long-term housing and amenities for those traveling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for cancer related treatments through Nick’s House™, by funding innovative cancer research through the Nicholas E. Colleluori Lymphoma research fund, by serving family meals and offering outlets of entertainment, by providing fresh groceries to patients being discharged from lengthy hospital stays, by delivering comfort kits to newly hospitalized patients preparing for treatment or transplant, and by lending an arm of support through their peer to peer advocacy group.

The blueprints for the Foundation were conceptualized by Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori in 2006, from his hospital bed while he underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which ultimately claimed his life.  Today, Nick’s vision is being fulfilled through the relentless efforts of his family, athletes and supporters across the country uniting in the fight against cancers.
