FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
9th Patriot Cup presented by GEICO benefitting HEADstrong, 2/18 at Ford Center at the Star, Frisco, TX
FRISCO, TX – On Saturday, February 18, 2017, the Patriot Cup, presented by GEICO, will return to North Texas for its 9th tournament, only this time it will take place at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Ford Center at The Star is a state-of-the-art, 510,000 square foot indoor athletic facility shared by the Dallas Cowboys, the City of Frisco, and Frisco ISD’s high schools. The Patriot Cup will be the first lacrosse event held at the new facility and is expected to draw spectators from all over the state.
The Patriot Cup will feature a full day of events showcasing some of the nation’s best collegiate teams, including Stanford University vs. Duke University women’s teams, broadcasted live on ESPN3 and Notre Dame vs. Georgetown men’s teams, live on ESPNU. Powerhouse high schools such as Highland Park, Westlake Austin, and Frisco Boys & Girls club teams will also be competing in the tournament.
Proceeds from the event will benefit HEADstrong Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to improve lives affected by cancer. HEADstrong was founded by Nicholas Colleluori, a beloved student-athlete at Hofstra University who was terminally diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2005. His public fight from the sidelines captivated the nation and from his hospital bed he created an organization focused on improving lives affected by the disease. His vision was simple yet critical; helping real families when they needed it most, providing support so that families may live with a greater dignity and normalcy. Colleluori fought to improve the inpatient experience, the affordability and accessibility of care and tackled the general concerns facing the patient population. Understanding the ripple effect and impact that a cancer diagnosis had on a family, Colleluori championed efforts to support caregivers and capital projects to improve accommodations. He empowered his own family and in the last days of his life asked them to pick up the ball where he left off. It’s a promise that the Colleluori family continues to fulfill through the essential services offered by the HEADstrong Foundation, www.HEADstrong.org.
“We’re pleased to host Patriot Cup, presented by GEICO, here at Ford Center at The Star,” said Dallas Cowboys Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones. “This facility was made for tournaments like this, and we expect a great turnout from not only fans of lacrosse, but all of the great sports fans of North Texas who will come out to support this event.”
“The popularity of lacrosse in Texas continues to grow and the partnership between the Patriot Cup benefitting HEADstrong and The Star in Frisco is a major step for us. Having a Division 1 men’s game and a top quality Division 1 women’s matchup is new and exciting and speaks for the popularity of the sport in Texas.” said Richard Moses and Tim Perkins.
Notre Dame Head Coach, Kevin Corrigan is excited about the prospect of bringing his team down to Texas – lacrosse’s hotbed of top-level competition. “We could not be more excited to have a chance to play in Texas, more impressed with the beautiful facilities at The Star, or more honored to represent the HEADstrong Foundation. This is a premier event in the lacrosse season and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”
“On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation and those we humbly serve, we wish to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Patriot Cup committee, GEICO, the Dallas Cowboys organization, the participating collegiate and high school programs as well as the many spectators who are planning on attending this very special event. The Patriot Cup is a celebration of the sport and its growth in Texas and a statement for those in the fight against cancer. It is incredibly humbling to see HEADstrong mission take flight in the region and this event will allow us to strengthen our commitment cancer patients and families living in and/or seeking treatment in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. ” Cheryl Colleluori, HF President & Nick’s Mom
