Rockville Centre Lacrosse raises more than $27,000 in 27K Shot Challenge
Rockville Centre, NY – The Rockville Centre Lacrosse Club presented the 27K Shot Challenge on March 10 in support of the HEADstrong Foundation. Lacrosse players from Rockville Centre and the surrounding area participated in an 11-hour continuous shooting barrage that began at 8 a.m.
The event raised $27,135, according to organizer Tommy Susko, assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Adelphi University and coach and board member for the Rockville Centre Lacrosse Club.
Participants raised funds leading up to the event by empowering their family, friends and fans to make pledges based on shots taken the day of. Supporters were encouraged to make a minimum donation of $27, which covered a bucket of balls, or 27 shots. Participants received 27 balls per round in honor of former Hofstra lacrosse player and HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori. The achieved goal was to reach 27,000 shots by the completion of the 11-hour challenge and raise $27,000 to enable the Rockville Centre Lacrosse Club to sponsor a room at Nick’s House.
“At one point during the day we had three or four people waiting in line at all 12 cages to shoot,” Susko said. “It was mostly the people and the schools in our town who wanted to get together and give back to something. Cancer doesn’t care who you are; it doesn’t discriminate, and everybody has a friend or family member who has been affected by it. To me, it was a no-brainer to help the Colleluori Family to continue the quest of what they promised Nick. It was a nice event, a reminder that it’s about our mission to give back in the wake of all the game gives us.”
Nick’s House is a guest family home operated by the HEADstrong Foundation which provides complimentary lodging and support to families displaced while seeking comprehensive cancer treatment and clinical trials. Nick’s House provides more than 2,555 annual nights of lodging and more than $1.25 million in relief.
“On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation and those we humbly serve, we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to our Rockville Centre Lacrosse Club family for taking on this incredible challenge,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom. “We are truly humbled by RVC’s commitment to sponsoring a room at Nick’s House and for their continued involvement with our organization. It means the world to us to see so many of our Long Island friends and families celebrating our Nick’s life, legacy and carrying his torch. The funds raised through this amazing effort will allow us to strengthen our commitment to families displaced while pursing cancer treatment. We hope that Rockville Centre’s efforts inspire other lacrosse clubs from across the country to host a 27K shot challenge in their community. We are honored to call Rockville Centre a partner in the fight.”
