(PHILADELPHIA) – With more than 2,500 participants and 4,000 donors representing 125 registered teams thus far, Lacrosse Mustache Madness is growing like never before and things are really heating up. Just 4 weeks into the fundraiser and teams have already raised a staggering $216,000 in support of families overcome by cancer. With a goal of $315,000 there is a ton of energy, excitement and anticipation surrounding the month of November and the start of the National Lax Stache-Off Against Cancer, a month-long tournament in which teams are seeded, bracketed and pinned against real competition and go head-to-head in live rounds. Teams that out raise their opponents will survive and advance until one team is crowned a National Lax Stache Champion.

The National Stache-Off Against Cancer has become one of the hallmarks of the 8-week campaign, as it pairs programs against each other despite their NCAA level, division or status. This year, the largest pool of teams in campaign history will compete in 14 divisions appropriately named: The Anchor, Caterpillar, Chevron, Comb, Flavor Savor, Fu Man Chu, Handlebar, Horseshoe, Imperial, Lip Duster, Lip Warmer, Shadow, Stubble and Walrus division. Teams will battle during fundraising periods in which incremental fundraising progress during the period will be used as the gage. Teams that out raise their opponents at the conclusion of the period will advance to the next round.

The Stache-Off action will kick-off on Tuesday November 3rd and will conclude on November 30th when the coveted Stachey trophy will be presented to our National Champion! The Marquette University Golden Eagles will be defending their title and supporters can follow all of the action at @LaxStacheMadness & @HEADstrongFND over the next four weeks.

Lacrosse Mustache Madness was created by former professional lacrosse player and UVA standout Ken Clausen, who was inspired to use his own facial hair to honor HEADstrong founder Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori, an NCAA lacrosse player from Hofstra University who was terminally diagnosed with cancer in 2005. Colleluori’s public fight from the sidelines captivated the nation and from his hospital bed he created an organization focused on empowering student-athletes to improve lives affected by the disease. After enduring 14-months of treatment, Colleluori tossed his razor and grew a mustache in the last weeks of his life as an emotional buffer due to his declining physical appearance. In an uncontrollable situation, Colleluori’s mustache was a positive buffer and conversation starter which was also a way for him to feel “normal” again. To date, more than 14,000 collegiate student-athletes, representing more than 327 colleges and universities have participated in Lacrosse Mustache Madness. Additionally, the campaign has engaged more than 24,701 donors having raised more than $1,513,284.75 to support families overcome by cancer and fund nights at Nick’s House for families displaced in the pursuit of treatment.

Proceeds from the campaign will aid families overcome by cancer and underwrite nights at Nick’s House, a guest family home operated by the HEADstrong Foundation for families forced to travel in the pursuit of advanced cancer treatment and clinical trials.
