Meet Nick Colleluori
Meet Nick Colleluori
At 19, lacrosse player Nick Colleluori was going into his sophomore year at Hofstra University, and in September of 2005, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma—a blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system. When he was diagnosed, he channeled his inner athlete to tackle the disease. Nick defied the odds, focusing his attention and energy during treatments on creating a non-profit organization to improve quality of life for other patients and their families while uniting athletes nationwide in the fight against cancer. From his hospital bed, the HEADstrong Foundation™ was born.
On November 28, 2006, after a 14-month battle that included chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant, Nick passed away with his family by his side. His battle was a perfect example of courage, dignity and the relentless attitude to fight against cancer, which has become a part of HEADstrong’s mission.
We are carrying out Nick’s mission to improve lives affected by cancer. At HEADstrong, we offer financial, residential and emotional support to families affected by cancer. We support cancer patients and their families with peer support, comfort kits, financial help and lodging for families seeking cancer treatments in the Philadelphia area.
Each year, thousands of families travel to the Philadelphia region seeking world-renowned cancer treatments from some of the top facilities in the country. For many families, their stay in the Philadelphia area can exceed 50 days, which impacts their already challenging financial situation.
In response to the demand for long-term housing for families that have been displaced in the Philadelphia region, the HEADstrong Foundation provides complimentary housing for cancer patients and their families at Nick’s House. Nick’s House can serve seven families at once, providing more than 2,555 complimentary nights annually. Located in Swarthmore, PA, Nick’s House offers families a haven of comfort, allowing them to focus on taking care of their loved one.
