How to Show Your Support During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and organizations like the HEADstrong Foundation are showing their support by spreading awareness around this debilitating disease through financial, residential and emotional efforts. About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, making breast cancer the third most common form of cancer, following lung and colorectal. To help spread awareness, we’re sharing 5 great options to help you get involved and show your support to anyone in need during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Wear Pink

Probably the most visible way to show your support, add some pink to your wardrobe! You’ll often see someone donning the pink ribbon, symbolizing breast cancer awareness—but have you ever wondered why? The pink ribbon movement all started in 1982 by a woman named Susan G. Komen. Her sister, Nancy, vowed to her sister that she would end breast cancer forever and the Susan G. Komen organization was born! Another great way to contribute to the cause? Eat and drink pink! Many local bars and restaurants participate and donate a portion of their proceeds to cancer funds.

Volunteer Your Time

Spreading awareness doesn’t always involve spending money. Volunteer your time to foundations, organizations, charity events and runs. Your efforts will not go unnoticed! At the HEADstrong Foundation, our volunteers help at Nick’s House, events and even in our office. Improve lives affected by cancer by volunteering!

Get Informed and Spread Awareness

Did you know that according to BreastCancer.org, by the end of 2019, it’s estimated that over 250,000 women and over 2,500 men will have been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer? Learn the facts, symptoms and your personal risks so you can keep yourself protected and informed.

Donate

Many breast cancer charities welcome donations of any size. You can choose to donate money, or a gift and your donation can be in honor or memory of a loved one. At HEADstrong, your donation will have a direct impact on the patients and families that stay at Nick’s house.

Fundraise

A fun way to get involved, start a fundraiser! Your support helps improve lives affected by cancer. Start a Fighter Fund today to raise money to help those affected by cancer!
