HEADstrong Retains Fair Housing Accommodation After Four-Year Battle

By Drew Haig

(PHILADELPHIA) – It is with tremendous pride, gratitude, and excitement that we announce that the HEADstrong Foundation’s four-year legal dispute to retain a Fair Housing Accommodation to operate Nick’s House, Swarthmore for families affected by cancer traveling to Philadelphia for advanced cancer treatment has been resolved with a ruling by the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania in favor of the accommodation.

HEADstrong would not be able to celebrate this momentous occasion without the assistance of Matthew McClure, Esq. and his team at Ballard Spahr LLP, as well as Stephan Pahides, Esq., and Christine Reuther, Esq. of McCausland, Keen and Buckman LLP. The skilled pro-bono services provided by this notable team throughout the entire process have ensured that innumerable families will have a home when they seek life-saving treatment in the greater Philadelphia area for years to come. The HEADstrong Foundation will be forever indebted to each of you, and expresses our deepest gratitude on behalf of the organization and beneficiaries.

We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the HEADstrong Board of Directors, the HEADstrong community at large, as well as the residents of Swarthmore and the Swarthmore Borough Council for their unwavering support. We are eternally grateful to have such caring individuals alongside us in the fight to improve lives affected by cancer.

Since 2011, Nick’s House has served as a home to patients and their families. With the long-awaited closing of these proceedings last week, HEADstrong will continue to fulfill its mission of improving lives affected by cancer without objection. Nick’s House is currently at capacity, welcoming families from as far away as Texas. While maintaining fundraising efforts to operate Nick’s House outside of Philadelphia, the foundation will also be moving forward with plans for the next iteration of this service in New York City.

“There is no doubt that our Nick is smiling from heaven. We know personally what it’s like to be uprooted from your home, to leave your job, friends, family and your support system behind in an attempt to save the life of a loved one. Nick’s House provides accessibility and affordability to the best medical treatment. We look forward to continuing to serve families nationwide during their darkest times. Nick’s House is a beacon that will guide them. We are so grateful to the many supporters that stood with us during this journey.” – Cheryl Colleluori
