HEADstrong Happenings : April 2011
The spring season has been filled with hope for a cure with HEADstrong events all over the country. Nick’s vision and the Foundation continues to capture the interest of many lacrosse players and programs. There are many organizations to thank and below is a listing of our April supporters. The Foundation is ever so grateful for the support of our lacrosse family. Your support has allowed us to grow beyond our expectations and to really make an impact in those treating and afflicted by blood cancers.
HEADstrong Charity of Choice Events:
Face-off Classic, M & T Stadium, Baltimore, Maryland, Saturday, March 12th and Big City Classic, New Meadowlands Stadium, New Brunswick, New Jersey, Sunday, April 3rd – charity of choice for the games. Many thanks to our partners, Inside Lacrosse for allowing us a day of awareness and to our supporters, the scores who visited our tent and gave us words of encouragement letting us know we are doing it right.
Villanova University Men’s Lacrosse vs University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse, Villanova, Pennsylvania, Saturday, April 9th – charity of choice for the game. The Villanova Men’s team showed their support by warming up in HEADstrong Lime Green t-shirts and the Delaware Men’s teams showed their support by sporting HEADstrong Lime Green shoelaces.
Oak Neck Athletic Council – Bayville, New York hosted a Score for a Cure Day on Saturday, April 16th at Centre Island Field. Beginning at 8:30am Boys Youth Games followed by Kings Point USMMA vs Drew University followed by Locust Valley Girls vs Levittown Girls. The weather couldn’t dismiss the spirit of the day and over $10,000 was raised for the Foundation. The town of Oyster Bay represented the Foundation with a Citation for their work in promoting health awareness that encourages teamwork and sportsmanship uniting people for a common and worthwhile purpose. Special thanks for Al and Nancy Staab, Bob Quinn, Cathy and Dave Rapelje, Helen and John Piscitello for their kindness and hospitality and the volunteers, coaches and participants who made the day possible.
2nd Annual Rivalry Games at Widener University, Chester, Pennsylvania was held on Saturday, April 23rd and featured (12) of the top High School Varsity and JV Lacrosse Rivalries in the Philadelphia area. The event created in partnership with the Widener University Men’s Lacrosse Team to further the HEADstrong Mission in the Fight against Cancer. The games provide a community service opportunity for teams and individual players with a chance to explore the Widener Men’s Lacrosse Program. The games began at 9am with the final game played at 7:30pm under the lights. The Foundation recognizes and thanks the following teams for their efforts in raising approximately $35,000.

Hofstra University Men’s Lacrosse vs Penn State University Men’s Lacrosse Game was held on Saturday April 30th Hempstead, New York. Special thanks for the Student Athletic Council who manned the HEADstrong tent. Blood cancer awareness was evident in the Shuart Stadium as the lime green nets were used during game. Over $5,800 was raised for the Foundation. The Foundation is extremely grateful to Hofstra University for the continued support of Nick’s cause.
