PHILADELPHIA — On Thursday, July 12, 2018, the HEADstrong Foundation will hold the 1st Annual Teeing-Off Against Cancer golf outing to benefit families in their fight against cancer through Nick’s House, as well as other programs dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by the disease. The special golf outing will take place at Springfield Country Club, located at 400 W. Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064.

Approximately 18,200 men, women and children in the Philadelphia metropolitan area are diagnosed with cancer every year. Additionally, more than 3,600 families face the challenge of having to travel to Philadelphia in order to pursue life-changing treatment. What if one of these people happened to be somebody that you loved?

The outing will be co-chaired by lifelong friends and local businessmen Paul Wechsler and Bill Adolph. Wechsler, a retired wealth manager who serves on the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners, hosted a golf outing for 20 years for leukemia and blood cancer research before retiring from his financial planning firm in 2016. However, after some time away to reflect, Wechsler realized he still had a desire to give back to individuals and families ravaged by cancer.

“Over the past two years, I continued to read and witness stories of courageous individuals and families still battling and affected by this disease,” Wechsler said. “We decided we did not want to sit back anymore. When approached by the HEADstrong Foundation and learning of their tremendous efforts in patient support and Nick’s courageous fight and vision, I thought this was the perfect way to stay involved and continue to make a contribution. About the time of my retirement, my good friend Bill Adolph, who I have known since the third grade, was retiring after 25 years of public service. What better way for two old friends to humbly continue to give back to our community and use our backgrounds and relationships in support of the HEADstrong Foundation through this event?”

Adolph, who worked as a partner in an accounting firm as well as serving as a former member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives until his retirement in 2016, agreed with his friend’s sentiments. Having run his own golf outings for close to 30 years to assist local families in need, including cancer-affected patients, Bill also wanted to continue giving back to a foundation that was close to home. One of his sons, Sam, serves on the board of the HEADstrong Foundation.

“Springfield Country Club is centrally located and close to Nick’s House,” said Adolph, the former Republican chair of the Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee. “The Colleluori Family is well known in the area; plus, my sons all played lacrosse and knew Nick, so we saw that we had a good opportunity here. I’ve been drawn to the HEADstrong Foundation, and now it’s a matter of getting the word out and connecting people to it.”

After learning of HEADstrong’s work to assist families affected by cancer, Wechsler and Adolph both felt compelled to ignite their business network and community to rally around the organization. Teeing-Off Against Cancer will directly assist local families and fund complimentary nights at Nick’s House in Swarthmore. Support is instrumental in the foundation’s commitment to families living here while their loved ones undergo advanced treatment in the region.

We are so grateful to Paul Weschler for the rebirth of his golf outing and for selecting the HEADstrong Foundation as a benefactor, and to Bill and Sam Adolph for all their efforts in ensuring the outing is a success,” HEADstrong President Cheryl Colleluori said. “This event gives our Delaware County neighbors the opportunity to support our guest families at Nick’s House, as well as our own Delaware County families who are struggling because of a cancer diagnosis. This is what makes Delco so special.”
