1st HEADstrong Women’s Lacrosse Day To Feature 4 Events and 21 Teams, 10/15

HOLMES, PA – Sunday, October 15th is shaping up be the largest single women’s lacrosse day in the history of the HEADstrong Foundation.  That day, Hofstra University, Long Island University Post, Rutgers University and University of Pennsylvania will be hosting fall scrimmages dedicated to the advancing the cause.  The events will feature 21 top tiered women’s college lacrosse teams in the country.

The legacy of Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori and the relentless efforts of the HEADstrong Foundation is one that has woven a thread throughout the game of lacrosse and the organizations impact in recent years has rallied many in the women’s game to run with Nick’s torch.  HEADstrong’s women’s lacrosse fundraising coordinator Taylor Albright, is one of those incredible people who have been inspired by Colleluori’s vision to make a difference and she has ignited the women’s side of the game to get involved.

Nicholas Colleluori was a college lacrosse player entering his sophomore year, when he was terminally diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His public fight from the sidelines at Hofstra University captivated the nation and from his hospital bed he created an organization focused on empowering student-athletes to improve lives affected by the disease. His vision was simple yet critical; helping real families when they needed it most, providing support so that families may live with a greater dignity and normalcy. Colleluori fought to improve the inpatient experience, the affordability and accessibility of care and tackled the general concerns facing the patient population. Understanding the ripple effect and impact that a cancer diagnosis had on a family, Colleluori championed efforts to support caregivers and capital projects to improve accommodations. He built an awareness platform driven by lime green shoelaces, the national awareness color for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He empowered his own family and in the last days of his life asked them to pick up the ball where he left off. It’s a promise that the Colleluori family continues to fulfill through the essential programs and services offered by the HEADstrong Foundation, www.HEADstrong.org.

“One Team, One Family, One Fight.  This was the powerful motto of the Villanova women’s lacrosse team last season as they rallied around teammate Kathleen O’Connor as she battled lymphoma.  Now in remission, Kathleen O’Connor is returning to the playing field this fall and will be making her debut on October 15th.  We are honored to call Kathleen a member of the HEADstrong Foundation and are adopting her motto to symbolize our fight against cancer in NCAA women’s lacrosse through 4 events, 21 teams involved with fundraising on October 15th.  What an amazing tribute and testament on behalf of families affected by cancer.  We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all of the participating teams for giving further purpose to the fall lacrosse season and helping us to get aHEAD of cancer.  We are looking forward to sharing an inspirational day of lacrosse and the cause with so many special families.” says Cheryl Colleluori, HF President and Nick’s Mom
